Worship Arts Tour

This tour will offer an opportunity to:

  • Get acquainted with other persons in Central Plains Conference who are involved in creating visual elements in worship
  • Visit a variety of churches in the Twin Cities to view and draw inspiration from their visual arts
  • Share ideas and get feedback on success and challenges you have in developing visual arts within your congregation

Schedule
Friday, March 12
11-1 p.m.    Arrive and check in at Carondelet Center, 2009 Randolph Avenue, St. Paul
                    (lunch on your own)

1-5 pm.    Tour of churches

5-7 p.m.    Dinner at an ethnic restaurant

7:45-9:30    Reflection on the day and sharing of ideas from individual churches,
                   facilitated by Martha Yoder

Saturday, March 13
8 a.m.    Breakfast at Carondelet Center

9-noon    Tour of churches

Noon    Conclusion of retreat

Optional extra day:
Saturday, March 13
Noon    Lunch in an ethnic restaurant

Afternoon    Visit Minneapolis Institute of Art or other attractions

Evening    Dinner at an ethnic restaurant, followed by arts/culture event of choice (tbd)

Sunday, March 14
Morning    Attend a local Mennonite Church.
Emmanuel Mennonite Church, Faith Mennonite Church, and the Third Way Community all hold morning services; Hmong Mennonite Church, Missio Dei, and St. Paul Mennonite Fellowship meet on Sunday afternoon.

Tour Leaders
      Martha Yoder is the Associate Pastor at West Union Mennonite Church, Parnell, Iowa.  She has earned Master of Arts degrees in both Painting and Printmaking and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Printmaking from the University of Iowa.
      Joetta Schlabach is the Pastor of Faith Mennonite Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota.  She holds an MA in Theology and a Certificate in Pastoral Ministries from the College of St. Catherine’s, St. Paul, Minnesota.
      Sandra Westby, Cleta Roth Gingerich and Mike Okerstrom, are helping to design the tour.  They are involved in worship and the arts at Faith Mennonite Church.

Accommodations
Participants will stay at Carondelet Center, a retreat and conference facility owned by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.  All rooms use a shared bath (one for men and one for women); linens, towels, and hair dryers provided.  Breakfast is included with the room fee.  All other meals will be in restaurants (chosen by the group) and individuals will pay accordingly.
