Ah, retreat! The very word relaxes like the sound of water lapping along a quiet lake shore. It satisfies like a leisurely, home-cooked breakfast. "Lord, I want a retreat like this! I need a retreat like this. Where shall I go?"
Swan Lake Christian Camp near Viborg, South Dakota was just such a retreat for the 81 Central Plains Mennonite Women who gathered on September 19-20. The theme for the weekend, “Slowing down to Catch Up with Life,” was set amidst the rich, fall splendor of the camp, inviting unhurried conversation with God and others, and permission to get away for some food for the spirit.
Guest speaker, Andrea Wall, Pastor of Discipleship & Witness at Bethesda Mennonite Church, Henderson, Nebraska, reflected on her own journey from an overloaded and stress-filled life, to an abundant life that finds its center in the Lord rather than in a to-do list. Andrea shared stories, scriptures, journal activities, and "tools for the journey" to redesign our own too-busy lives and to turn our lives over to God, discovering anew God’s promise to meet all our needs.
On the lighter side of the weekend, were casual lakeside walks, pampering skin care seminars, soothing foot soaks, hands-on crafts, and time to nap, journal, and pray. Faith & Life Bookstore from North Newton, KS, drove the distance and displayed an array of books, resources and gifts for our shopping pleasure.
